The Greek poem “Ancient eternal and immortal spirit” with the music by Spyros Samaras was performed for the first time at the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. Thereafter, a variety of musical offerings provided the backgrounds to the Opening Ceremonies until 1960. On 55 th session of The International Olympic Committee in Tokyo decided unanimously to adopt it as the official Olympic anthem.
