It's not necessarily way too involved a process to do yourselves!
It depends on your individual circumstances, how confident you feel,
how much time you're prepared to devote to it and how much money you
can spend!
I did not have an agent (but I did have help from this site!) as my
application was very straightforward, I was happy with what I was doing
and I had time on my hands. For me it was definitely worth it for the
money saved!
But going it alone is clearly not for everyone.
