I came with $11,000. I took some time off to find my feet and sort out
all the admin (Medicare, etc). I started work within a couple of weeks
of starting looking.

I'm not saying it wasn't a risk coming with so little (I did have some
'fallback' money that I was hoping not to touch - and didn't) but if
you've done your research and you are determined, then it definitely
can be done.
