I think you'll find they are Australian *by descent* rather than by
birth.
Australian citizens by descent, I would think, rather than by grant.
The distinction is important should they have children also born outside
Australia, if they have not lived in Australia meanwhile.
It doesn't matter what happened in respect of the Australian
authorities. If they were born in the UK before 1983 they are British
by birth and that's that.
Before 1983, anyone born in the UK (except children of diplomats and
enemy aliens) was automatically British. Not only was it automatic,
it was mandatory - parents had no say in the matter.
Your siblings didn't "apply for dual citizenship" - they already had
it, all they applied for was *evidence* of their British citizenship in
the form of British passports. But they already had the citizenship
from birth.
