Labor retains lead in new poll

Federal Labor has continued to edge ahead in the latest opinion
poll. Today's Newspoll in the Australian newspaper has a 12 point
gap between the two major parties, showing Labor in a landslide
winning position with 56 per cent of the vote after preferences.

KERRY O'BRIEN: Well the two big football seasons are over but we
don't know when Australia's political grand final kicks off. In
this case, of course, one of the teams blows the whistle to start
the game, and their leader is still keeping that close to his
chest.
Today's Newspoll, which actually shows Labor's lead increasing
again, has some pundits predicting that the Prime Minister will
delay the election until perhaps the last week in November. . .

Note: No fixed election day in Australia. The Prime Minister
[head of the party in power, currently Liberal/Country party
coalition can call an election anytime, but must call one every
three years or so from memory.
Unlike the US, elections are by direct vote of citizens. Not
decided by "Electoral College" as in the USA.
Liberal/Country Party coalition roughly equivalent to
Republican Party in USA, Labor roughly equivalent to Democratic
party, but neither is as extreme.
