Hi!
First of all, despite my joking I did have to enter the US, make a U-turn
and come back into Canada. I brought MANY documents with me, but they only
asked to see a bank statement. I said sure here it is, but I said also I'm
being sponsored by my Canadian wife and thought we didn't have to show
further financial docs. I said this sort of as an aside. She (the
immigration employee) literally glanced at the statement. The whole thing
took just minutes, but then again 1000 Islands is not the biggest crossing
point I'm sure. Next I was directed to customs. One must present a list
(fairly detailed) of all accompany good entering Canada (none in my case)
and all those to follow, This list must be presented right then or be
completed on the spot (my case, since I wasn't prepared--I thought I'd have
plenty of time to this). I left my home at 10 am drove to 1000 Islands
(about 1 1/2 hours away). On the way back I applied fpr OHIP and SIN card in
Kingston. I was home by 4:30 or so!! The only real questions were about my
address. I guess it is unusual to have an out of Canada applicant already
living in Canada. I was here legally of course and they didin't ask to see
the visitor visas I brought. My advice would be to bring a files of anything
you think may be releevant in addition to the passport and docs you received
when passport was returned. You will probably bring all this back unused,
but I felt better having it along. They told me the PR card would come to
me automatically in about 8 weeks. All in all a pleasant and unremarkable
process. After all the paperwork and waiting one expects balloons and
confetti, but its just routine to them. My only disapointment was that no
one said "Welcome to Canada!" the way I've heard it said before.
All the best to you!
Forgive the sloppiness of my reply. I'm tired today. I' getting old for this
immigration stuff. Please contact me with any farther questions.
PS I guess Niagra is open on the weekend for immigration? Make sure.
Remember too that Monday is a national holiday.
