Recognition of MarriageHello;
If you want your marriage in Thailand to be recognized in Canada you =
have to have what your calling the "Licensed" wedding. Not really a =
wedding just registering it at the Government Agent. Give yourself a =
couple days to get it done though, you will first have to goto the =
Canadian Embassy and get the forms, then to the Thai Foreign Affairs =
building, then translators, and back to the Embassy. From there you can =
got the Marriage register and get legally married. If I remember =
correctly I had to go back to the Embassy and give them a photo copy of =
the marriage certificate. If you don't speak Thai bring a Translator =
with you, it can't be your wife to be, but can be anyone else that =
speaks Thai and English. All forms will be in Thai.
The ceremony you are talking about isn't a legal marriage and is =
optional, in the eyes of the law after you goto the marriage register =
and sign the papers you are married.
On a positive note for you, your wife to be won't loose her property =
rights the rules changed about 2 years back , we own a house in Thailand =
in my wife's name without a problem, but your name can't be on the deed. =
You won't be able to own property unless you invest a large sum of =
money in the country, then you can own 1 rai of land, about and average =
city lot.
And just to clarify again the ceremony is not a legal marriage even =
to the Thai Authorities, it is recognized by most people and they =
consider you man and wife but not legally.
There is a fair bit more advice I could give you if your interested, =
like first of all if you want to do an inland sponsorship and she =
doesn't have a good job, education, and comes from a well off family, =
DON'T. If your married and she doesn't have the above there is very =
little likelihood of her getting a Visitor Visa. Much more likely if =
she isn't married, and you do that here.
Anyways you can feel free to email me if you like I have been =
through the whole process my wife just finally got all her papers a =
month ago. ***scarecrow***@aisl.bc.ca Remover the (***) of course.

How can I find out if a marriage will be recognized by Canada/CIC? I =
am engaged and planning to marry in March my Thai fianc=E9. We have not =
started the immigration process yet and are planning to wait until after =
marriage.=20
The problem is that if we have a 'licensed' Thai wedding, my fianc=E9 =
could lose her right to own property (which she currently does) in =
Thailand. A traditional wedding 'up-country' that we are planning is =
accepted as official in Thailand without license, when the brides father =
'gives away' the bride. There will be plenty of her family in =
attendance, as well as some of mine. Plenty of photos and other =
evidentiary documentation will be kept for our own memories as well as =
for spousal visa app.
Any knowledge/advice to help us know if this will be acceptable to =
Canadian govt. is greatly appreciated. =20
Thank you.
