Subject: Does it affect immigration??????? Posted on: Tue, 10 Feb 2004 22:49:33 EST

Dear all,

My mother-in-law (sponsored for her immigration) and my wife with our baby
went to No Frill. My mom-in-law knows very little about Canadian customs and
regulations. While shopping she put some stuffs in child's stroller while my
wife was putting things in the cart. While my wife stood in line to pay for
those stuffs, her mom went outside the cashline as the baby was crying and
that triggered the alarm for non-payment. Company was accusing her mom for
"shop lifting". As both of them can't speak English much, they started
crying and hence was unable to explain the situation to the store. The
police came but they only told my wife to pay the penalty as determined by
the store later and left.

Yesterday I got a letter from the store lawyer demanding $475 each from my
wife and her mom. I'm devastated. Will it have any adverse effect on future
immigration and citizenship benefits? In what way, I can contest the charge
and clear their name? Is it worth going to court for this?

Thanks in advance for patiently reading this long mail.
