I have been reading this newsgroup off and one for about 11 years or so.
You have no idea how many times the same thing has been asked. The answer
is no, it is not useless. Even back then there were wonderful, totally daft
and silly but completely magnificent, flame wars. Actually back then they
were a little more fun because it would be intelligent and splendid fights
between lawyers and/or consultants who behaved more like court adversaries
rather than some of the sillier comments now made about .uality and
people's 'mutha's'.
But always always always there was (and is) good advice and genuine debate
about real issues. Usenet is the last wild west frontier of the Internet.
The vast majority of Internet users these days don't even know it exists.
Which is a little sad. I frequently recommend people who write to me to
come here and read and read and read and read and try to avoid dipping their
toes into the posting waters until they are sure they have been fitted with
flame proof wellies. but does it have a value. Yes it does. I assume that
sooner or later it will all vanish into a wisp of smoke but that will be a
shame and I for one will miss it when it is gone.
There are all kinds of groups and forums and e-mail lists and so on. But
the whole point and joy of usenet groups like these is that they are not
moderated. This is not kindergarten, this is a big boys(and girls) sandpit.
Enjoy it.
Just my never humble opinion. Oh and yes, I know that the vast majority of
regular users will have no clue who I am or why I would even comment but
long, long ago and oh so far away............ I used to post here a lot and
thanks to this group I am here in Canada, I am a citizen, and yes, I still
have the same old site with info that I hope will help others in the same
spirit that we had from people from this group who helped us with words of
encouragement and advice.
