I just did this last month. I don't know about Ontario, but for British
Columbia, their driver licensing office computers are all linked to all DMV
of 50 US states, in my case is California. In theory, they will know how
long you have had driver licence. However, I will still suggest to get the
US Driving abstract from your local DMV before you leave, just in-case.
As far as Canadian insurance, in my case for British Columbia, they only
look at the history of your previous car insurance company in the US if you
want to get favourable rate, so that you won't be treated like
newly-graduated driver. US Driving abstract is useless as far as car
insurance rates in Canada.
