This is a myth that is perpetuated by what USED to be true.
Up till around 2001 it was possible to simply walk across the border
and neither the US nor Canada would know where you were.
If you drove across, sometimes the US would scan your driving license
or your passport.
Around 2001 the US started doing two things:
1. Photographing the license plate of the car
2. Sharing their data with CIC.
So since 2001 it has not been possible to fool them by this method. It
also used to be possible to fool them by leaving the country and going
back to your own country as often your own country didn't stamp your
passport. When you came back, you told them you had been away two
weeks.
But you know what? A whole bunch of people got caught. You know why?
They check your credit records, your tax records and call your
neighbors.
If you weren't in the country they could find out easily enough so just
be honest.
