PMM/guru,
It is clear that guru will be able to maintain his PR status but
probably will not be eligible for citizenship. That's why I haven't
mentioned anything about his PR status. I did make a mistake in saying
he needs 3 out 5 but after visiting http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizen/becoming-howto.html
I found that it should be 3 out of the 4 years preceding the
citizenship application date.
For my situation, I landed July/05 and wish to obtain the citizenship
and therefore need to be there by July/07. So I should be able to
apply for citizenship on July/10 if I have not left Canada from July/
07 to July/10 (which equals to 1095 days). For the PR status it is
obvious that I will be able to follow the 2/5 rule.
The following is copied from the above site:
Adults must have lived in Canada for at least three years (1,095 days)
out of the four years preceding the application. Please note that you
cannot meet the residence requirements for citizenship without a
minimum of 2 years as a permanent resident. Time spent in Canada
before becoming a permanent resident may be counted toward becoming a
Canadian citizen if it falls within the four-year period. To find out
if you meet the residence requirements to become a Canadian citizen,
you can use the residence calculator.
