Hi,
I am an international graduate student (F1 status), and I am considered
non-resident alien for tax purposes. Af far as I know, I am supposed to
fill form 1040NR or 1040NR EZ for my tax return. However, some of my
fellow students (also F1 non-resident aliens) claim they were able to do
their returns online with TurboTax, and that they were able to get more
money back than if they had used NRAWare (the software my university
provides). I don't see any of the NR forms as supported on TurboTax's
site, and I guess these students used some of the other forms (1040 or
1040 EZ). My question is: is it legal to file online using 1040 or 1040
EZ (or some other form that is not an NR form) in my situation? Since
other people have done it, it for sure went through, but is there any
contradiction with the law that might have negative consequences later?
Thanks in advance for any clarifications!
Lauren
