Can a person keep 2 last names offically in US?
My passport has both last names, the one I used at time of entering US
the first time, as well as the one I changed to (chnaging to my
biolgical last name) inside US. I requested to add the second one on
my passport. In fact, the first last name was not really a surname as
we don't have surname system where I grew up - native country - though
my ethnic group (foreign origin) carry on surnames traditionally.
If I were to change back to the one I was using initially at time of
GC application, what would I need to do aside from showing that it is
my passport. I also my have a social security card with the name I
used initially in US. Later, I applied and received the same social
security number with the new name.
All my degree certificate and school transcripts in US are with second
name. So, if I change my name back to the old one, what would I need
to do to ask the school to update my name.
The only reason for my wanting to change the name back to the old one
was that I recently became concerned that with my twin sister arriving
to US a few years ago, both of us having the same biological surname -
we do not have the same last name for the other name - and the same
birthdate might cause problems down the road with regard to credit
cards, and other financial matters.
Should I not be worried about it based on these two facts. I have
moved to the same city - the city where she has been living - mid last
summer. My family bought this property a little over a year ago, in
her name. She had *never* lived at this address but water and sewage
bill has been in her name from the beginning.
And this past week, I have noticed that credit card offers in her name
started arriving to my address, the address where she *never* lived
but has the ownership.
My twin is not detail oriented like I am and I feel that to minimize
any potential disaster, I should change my last name officially. Any
other idea? I would prefer to keep my surname.
BTW, it seems that, recrntly cerdit cards offer to her are being sent
to the address where she is living. I tend to think that it is
because of my cerdit history that credit cards offered are being sent
to her as she has not worked in US (only hlep family business and not
offically on the payroll) since she got here. She does have credit
cards in her name but not as the primary account holder.
What if I change my current last name to a name not on my passport,
like adding a couple of alphabet to my current surname which would
still preserve the menaing of my surname? What would I need to do?
After changing it on the US side (GC, DL, etc.), I can contact my
Embassy and request to add on my passport using Driver's License.
Should I bother changing at all. Keep in mind that my twin is not
organized and detail oriented. |
