I entered the USA from the UK in 2001 on an R1
visa. In order to obtain the visa I had to show that I was an ordained
member of a bona-fide religious organization. I had to prove I had been
serving in that capacity for more than two years. I also had to show
that the church I was joining in the USA had tax status of a recognized
religious group.

The R1 is not for members of a congregation, only for
full time paid emlpoyees of the denomination, ie priests, catechists,
educators.
