if i were you, i'd tell your friend to give an immigration attorney a
quick call, explain the situation and they'll be able to tell them
where to go from there.

most will give you some advice without
charging - i wouldn't shell out money before talking to someone first
on the phone. they might just find that it's a case of AOS and just
not leaving the country.
