airports and had no problems but never over a land border (I’ll be
entering via car or greyhound bus), what should I expect when crossing
the border, I know as a British citizen I don’t require a visa to enter
the US but I’ve heard that you now have to give finger prints when
entering the US, is this true?

Have a valid,
unexpired, machine readable British Citizen passport, evidence that you
have an interview, evidence that you're employed, and $6 in US funds.
Mandatory fingerprinting of visa waiver applicants will probably start
at airports in October and in January at the 50 largest landborder
crossings.
Although you won't be subject to mandatory fingerprinting at
the landborder in October, there's always a chance. They can detain and
fingerprint anyone who crosses the border at their discretion.
