Does't the receipt of I-485 application have a receipt notice date on
it? To check whether one's I-485 is being processed, one can check
based on receipt notice dates. See
https://egov.immigration.gov/cris/jsps/officeProcesstimes.jsp?selectedOffice=24

at http://www.uscis.gov, go to processing dates, which would take you
to the same pages as clicked for Case Status online
(https://egov.immigration.gov/cris/jsps/index.jsp).

There, click here for "Obtaining a List of Processing Dates" category
and depending on whether your application is at Service center or
district ofice, see which receipt notice dates are being processed. So
if you don't get any letter (for interview, etc.) while your receipt
notice dates has been processed, it's time to inquire.

With 12 magic number, I can assure you that that case status online is
not up to date. Mine (I-130) has been approved long time ago but if
enetred, it would say, it would take 990-999 to process.
