Re: air ticket question for F1 student Posted on: Sun, 14 Nov 2004 13:33:52 +0000 (UTC)

Hello,

I wanted to visit USA as a tourist and I am a German who does not need
a USA visa. I had found a cheap one-way ticket from Germany to USA. I
wanted to purchase the return ticket once I am in the US because I
thought I could find a last-minute ticket in the US. However, I have
read on the US embassy website that people like I need a return ticket
or a ticket from USA to another country BEFORE I enter USA.

You should be like me if your F1 visa expires at the end of 2004
because you will have no valid visa any more.

I have bought a return ticket from Germany once I have purchased the
one-way ticket to USA. You should do the same. Of course, it is not as
cheap as a last-minute ticket, but you avoid lots of problems.

The immigration officer at the PoE will take a look at your passport
and he will notice that your F1 visa has expired and that you are
entering USA as a tourist under the VWP and that you have no ticket
from USA to Ireland. Therefore he will suspect you to continue your
studies even though you have no F1 visa any more. That will cause you
lots of problems.

Therefore: Purchase a one-way ticket USA-Ireland JUST BEFORE you fly
to USA. Even if you get an e-ticket, you should be fine at the PoE.
But you should be able to prove it to the immigration officer at the
PoE.

Btw, I fully understand you: we students have to take a good look at
our wallet because it is not the biggest one...;-)
