Abandoning LPR and Reapplying Posted on: Sun, 14 Nov 2004 21:18:55 +0000 (UTC)

Hello,

My father-in-law is interested in coming to U.S. as a Permanent
Resident, although my mother-in-law would need to stay in their native
country to take care of their minor son. Let's assume that he comes
to U.S. as a LPR but decides to abandon it after 2-3 years to go back
to his native country.

Is is possible to reapply again for LPR at some point in the distant
future (say 10-20 years later)? Will this impact his chances of
getting LPR a 2nd time if he had originally abandoned his LPR? Also,
if he were to abandon LPR, whould he still be eligible for a
non-immigrant visitor's visa to visit us? I assume that this would
greatly impact his chance of getting a visitor's visa if he had
abandoned LPR.

Thanks.
