Depending on the POE officer, will depend on what they decide to do. I
travelled on the VWP by land, and on all trips except one, I was asked for
a return ticket to Canada as proof of my intent to depart within 90 days.
The only time they didn't ask, I was referred to secondary as they thought
I was too "rehearsed in my story" that no ticket would have convinced them
I was leaving, they wanted proof of finances and job in Canada (where I live).
If you plan to depart to Ireland, you are best to have a ticket back
there, be it one way or return, won't matter, as long as your ticket shows
you are intending to leave on a given date.
