When you will enter US , at POE (Port of entry) following will happen :

Situation # 1 --- If you walk towards PR line

The officer will ask for your passport and will try to find GC stamp in
your passport, (because your AOS is pending there is no stamp) after
looking at passport he/she will ask if you have a Green Card (as a
physical card) if you say no then he/she will ask your A # , after
getting the Alien number the officer will know that your AOS is pending
and will send you to officers handling regular visitors and will be
fingerprinted. (if you do not have A# then the officer will assume you
are not PR and will do the same)

Situation # 2 --- If you walk towards USC line

The officer will ask for your passport hoping to see a blue passport
(USPP) and because you dont have one he/she will send you to officers
handling regular visitors and you will be fingerprinted.

------
in both cases remember, you will make them suspicious about you that why
you are trying to pass the POE through these lines?

most ppl fear when their AOS is pending because they think they will not
be allowed entry, the maximum can happen (if you are not engaged in any
criminal activity) they will ask questions about the basis of your case
(eg. if aos is due to marriage, they will ask aobut your wife etc... )

hope this helps
