I'm not blaming the people but the consequences. The US is under no
obligation to provide a lifeboat for the rest of the would to its own
detriment. The lifeboat will eventually become full and sink everyone.

There were very few Mexicans there at the time, like Texas. They also
sold it to the US.
I'd be happy to sell California back to Mexico for the price of the
improvements alone. Of course that would be overpriced once it became
part of Mexico and the non-Mexicans left.
