since the deadlines for fall semester are usually in January, I can
assume that you will start your semester next winter. If you apply for
school in May, you will be too late to be accepted for fall semester.
If you do want to start in the fall semester, apply in advance, then
travel to the U.S. on tourist visa, come back to your country in July
and get F-1 visa. This way you won't have to go through a lengthy and
not at all guaranteed way of changing your status from B1/2 to F-1.
Plus if you are planning to change your status, that means that you
will be staying in the U.S. all the way from February through fall
without leaving.
