It sounds like you had some good luck at the airport. It's like
speeding, you don't get caught every time. I'd still suggest a visa and
a waiver for future travel because you're statutorily ineligible to use
the visa waiver program. They could figure it out at the most
inopportune times such as weddings, funerals, fancy vacations etc. and
then deny your entry.
