And getting married isn't that expensive that a poor student wouldn't be
able to do it. A big party maybe, but that is not a requirement for
getting married.

Now I'm only giving my opinion here, as I have no idea if you are close
to being eligible for a returning resident visa or not, but you could
always just file for one. If you get approved you get the visa, if not
you'll know for sure and will have to find a different road (like
possibly marrying your partner, if that's what you wish to do - big
wedding or not).
