Exactly. Please note that the spouse from Canada cannot easily visit
the spouse from the US.

A move back to Canada is a solution but one that cancels the green card
entirely.

So a lot of folks have to effectively choose between a divorce and a
green card. I do not think that many people in the US consider this a
problem. People are also more used to divorces so this is not a big
issue for many.
