yep it is a racket as u say. what did uscis say when you asked them what
happens when you get back to the u.s. port of entry with an expired GC?

i did that once with the old 'blue' type GC that did not have an
expiration date on it.. so i had no way of knowing it was 'expired'..
the officer told me to get a new one and let me go....

when you go to renew the GC they put a sticker on the back of your old
card extending it for one year so you can travel while waiitng for the
new card to arrive.
