Many people, myself included, are not arguing the fact that illegal
immigrants to the US are hard workers and do menial jobs that the
average American would not do. The issue is not who does what for
employment but who is legally authorized to take employment.
American has not had open migration for over two hundred years. Even in
the late 1700's there was an immigration department in this country as I
learned while reading a book on the history of New York City.
For myself it comes down to the one main issue: Illegal immigrants to
the US should not be rewarded for breaking a law by allowing them the
opportunity to legalize their presence here without being penalized for
past criminal behavior.
It doesn't matter that they have lived here for decades or that they
have children who are US citizens, or that they are law abiding in
every other way. They are criminals. They are not immigrants. You
need a visa to immigrate to the US. They do not and did not have one
when they entered.
They are not entitled by the sweat of their brow to obtain special
dispensation for past criminal conduct. A punishment must be given and
served before they should be allowed the opportunity to apply for a visa
to immigrate to the US.
If this is not done, then you are belittling all of us who have had to
work within the present system do things the legal way. If illegal
immigrants are given the right to remain in the US then you should just
do away with the immigration laws altogether for why have a law that can
be disobeyed without consequence.
Those who chose to cross the border and remain illegally knew what they
were doing when they chose that action. They knew what the consequences
were when they made their decision. Our government should not give them
dispensation. This is my opinion.
