If the consultate takes more than one year, do you really have to repay, re-apply Posted on: Mon, 13 Feb 2006 20:38:19 -0600

I am a US citizen living in Mexico. I'm married and have a stepdaughte
- my husband and little girl are both Mexican citizens.

We applied for a K-3 for my husband and his daughter in Juarez las
April. A month later, we had an appointment. We were thrilled by ho
fast everything went, because we had heard that it would take forever
The consulate said they had to take fingerprints and that we neede
some additional paperwork, and that they'd contact us as soon as th
results were in for our next appointment, which they estimated to b
July.

July came and went and we didn't get an appointment, although we'v
been ready with our additional paperwork and have been told that hi
fingerprint results our in. We have been calling every month (just t
make sure the letter didn't get lost in the mail), and every time we'r
given a different time-frame estimate.

It occurred to me that this may go on past April, and I read that i
your application get to be more than a year old, you have to reappl
and repay. I emailed the consulate to see if that was true, and the
responded that it is.

I can't believe it! If it goes beyond a year, that isn't our fault
we've been ready with all of our paperwork since July! And even if we'
had the correct paperwork in May, they still would have take
fingerprints, so it wouldn't have gone any faster. The delay reall
isn't our fault.

My questions -
1) Is it really likely that we'll have to pay and reapply even thoug
the delay isn't our fault? I'm really upset imagining that we'd have t
reapply, and frankly the idea of paying another $700 doesn't make m
thrilled, either.

2) Is it common for an application to take this long through Juarez
Why were they so fast at first and then suddenly have moved to
snail's pace
