Hi Pranav,
Just to expound on this issue.
You do not actually need to get an International Driving Permit. The IDP
is just a translation of your foreign licence, and does not increase
your remit to drive in the US, or any other country, for that matter.
As long as your Indian Licence has an English translation, which is
probably does, you can use it in the US.
As mentioned before, the main problem is getting insurance. DO NOT even
think about driving without insurance, as in th US, unlike in many other
civilized countires, you are required to be able to produce your
insurance certificate (as well as driving licence) on demand by a policeman.
Can you believe in this day and age, in one of alledgedly most civilized
countries, we have to have a mini panic every time we drive away from
home, and make sure we have all these documents on our persons, or in
the vehicle ?
But there you go!
