Event: UN General Assembly
Location: New York
Speech Date: 22/09/06
Speaker: Foreign Secretary

I want to send to Muslims my personal wishes for the happy occasion of the
start of the holy month of Ramadan.

I know that Ramadan is a month of contemplation, prayer, and of the Koran. I
realise too that it is the month of compassion, charity and sacrifice. This
serves as an important reminder for us all, Muslim and non-Muslim, of our
duty to help those less fortunate than ourselves.

Islam is very much a part of our history and our multi-cultural society in
Britain. The Government is committed to working with the Muslim community to
ensure that ignorance about this great faith is tackled.

We are also working across the world to support opportunities for dialogue
between faiths and cultures, and for mutual exchange of ideas. For only by
talking to each other and understanding each other's cultures and traditions
can Islam's beauty, wisdom and integrity be appreciated. This is a duty for
us all.

Finally, on behalf of all my colleagues in Government, I would like to wish
you Ramadan Mubarak.
