Airlines routinely ask for passports at check-in for international
flights in order to 1) establish that the passenger named on the
ticket and the traveler are one and the same, and 2) to establish that
the passenger has a valid passport (including any visas if necessary)
for admission to the destination country.
When has this not been the case (apart from flights from the US to,
say, the Bahamas and similar colonies)?
