where you can run into problems is when they are ready for college.
Most states have strict requirements for length of time as a "legal
resident" of the state prior to qualifying for in state tuition. Note
the "legal" statement. And paying the non-resident tuition is bundles
more expensive. Also, for any financial assistance an SSN is required.
So without one, no assistance.
Just went through this with my stepdaughter in Florida. She wants to
attend college next year, but will not have the necessary time as a
"legal resident" of the state. The tuition cost is astounding. From
$70 per credit hour for in-state tuition, it jumps to $290 for out of
state rates. And even though she has a GPA over 3.8, and scholastically
she would qualify hands down, she cannot apply for any financial aid or
available scholarships because she has not yet acquired an SSN as we are
only in the filing stages for AOS.
