Don't think you're the idiot, he seemed to get this advice from
outside of this group... But it seems to be a hit and miss thing, as
in, don't expect it to happen, because the rules preclude you from
being allowed to do that.

For instance, they don't normally take your I-94, however, if they do,
and you return, they may only admit you to the US for the remainder of
your 90 days. That seems to depend. For instance, were you there the
US for 85 or so days before going to Canada? Or only for say, 7-14
days, then you went to Canada, and came back? From the standpoint of
an Immigration Officer, staying 90 days plus 7 days already stayed is
not a big deal, but 90 days plus 90 days, is seen as more suspicious.
If you had a flight out of the US on a particular day, they might have
felt satisfied you were leaving and just did the automatic 90 days.

I wouldn't advice anyone to count on this working, but I'm sure it
works for people who don't need to be in the US longer than 90 days.
