You don't have to go to the US to get a job first; you can use your own
combined assets or a US Joint Sponsor (ie, real estate in the UK that
you will sell or hold, or a parent in the US.. both popular choices).

Do about a week's worth of reading and you will have an idea about
whether or not YOU need a lawyer.
