Subject: Immigration Policy Insanity: Will Oregon Send Foster Toddler to Child-Rapist Father? Posted on: Tue, 16 Oct 2007 03:56:17 +0000 (UTC)

Can't risk letting a two year old stay with the foster parents who
want to take care of him. Everyone knows two year olds are infamous
for not paying their fair share of taxes, after all.

So instead the state of Oregon may deport the kid to Mexico, to live
with her grandmother. Maybe his father, the convicted child rapist
will drop by. Or even take custody.

But we can't manage to reform our archaic immigration laws, because
somebody might utter the "a" word (amnesty). Oh heavens, the world
would end, just like it did 20 years ago when we did the same
thing. *Reagan* was all in favor of that, and yet it is too liberal a
notion for today's take-no-prisoners conservatives.

Such hubris. Thank heaven W has shifted the nation's party preference
from even in 2000 to a fifteen point Democrat advantage today.
Really, whichever Democrat wins the White House next year, he or she
should give Bush a pardon as a thank you for the next 25 years of
freezing the GOP out of the White House or a majority in the House.

So conservatives, write your favorite GOP representatives and urge
them to keep opposing immigration reform. That'll insure sad stories
like this one keep getting hung on the party of greed and xenophobia.

TOLEDO, Ore. -- A two-year-old Oregon boy is at the center of a
controversial custody ruling that would send him to Mexico to live
with his biological grandmother and possibly with his convicted child-
rapist father.

Last week, an adoption committee consisting of Oregon Department of
Human Services employees and members not affiliated with DHS ruled
that Gabriel Allred should live with his grandmother in Mexico,
despite the fact that he is an American citizen, DHS said.

The child's foster parents apparently learned that his biological
father, Roberto Valiente
-Martinez, will live in the home with his mother and young son.

Roberto Valiente-Martinez will be deported to Mexico, authorities
said. In 2000, he pleaded guilty to raping a 12-year-old girl and was
sentenced to five years in prison, records show.

He has also been convicted on drug charges.

Both the child's biological mother and father lost their parental
rights, according to DHS.

Foster parents Steve and Angela Brandt of Toledo, Ore., said they want
to adopt Allred. They have appealed the preliminary ruling.

"The goal of DHS is to get children out of the foster system as
quickly as possible and if they cannot be returned to their parents...
then by law we must look at other relatives," said Ann Snyder with the
DHS Office of Communications.

She added, however, that DHS is "taking another look at the
preliminary decision based on information in the appeal."
