Does she already have her greencard? She could try to apply for "permission
to re-enter", I believe it's called. If I remember correctly, usually after
about 6 months of non-residency, you lose your greencard status.

Can she apply for US citizenship? I hear that Germany now lets you keep your
citizenship there if you can show close ties to Germany (as you obviously
can)... (I lost my german citizenship when I became a Canadian a few years
ago)
