Linda and John,

I cannot speak for South Africa, never been there, but I think
you can't go very wrong with east Africa. Kenya is accessible,
offers different quality levels, but even the cheapest wildlife
lodges are good and luxurious. People speak English. The country
has a fair number of wildlife and nature reserves, much more
than enough for a three week safari.

Tanzania could be an interesting alternative, but Kenya is
definitely good for a first time safari.

However, October is not perfectly ideal for east Africa, because
that is the time they call "short rains" in Kenya. I personally
would go in October, because I don't mind the occasional rain,
the prices are a bit lower too, and there are slightly fewer
other tourists. But you should know.

I do avoid the "long rains" around April and don't recommend
that time, because they can get in the way. This is just to show
you that I don't just ignore the weather entirely.
