Jim,

you already got excellent advice, and I have nearly nothing to
add.

Just one little detail. If long drives on bumpy roads are
difficult for you, there's always the option to fly, and it's
not that much more expensive.

So if you ask for a tailor-made safari, you can ask for being
flown rather than driven.

I would recommend a mixture. Be driven on shorter distances
where the roads are not so bad, like to Lake Nakuru, and fly to
places like Maasai Mara or Samburu.
