We took travellers cheques in US dollars last year when we went to South
Africa, but brought them all home. It was much easier just to stop at an
ATM that was available in most towns and even in Kruger park. The bank card
worked almost as quickly there as it does at home, but you should visit an
ATM before you are completely out of Rands because sometimes the connections
don't work and you may have to come back the next day. We got Rands from
the bank machine, but it was charged to our bank account in Canadian dollars
at a reasonable exchange rate. We used a VISA credit card for most hotel
accommodation and restaurants, but quite a few petrol stations did not take
credit cards so a supply of Rands was necessary.
When we went to Zimbabwe we were glad we took some US dollars. They were
needed to pay the airport exit tax and they wouldn't accept Rands or any
other currency.
