Hello David.
You're absolutely right about wearing a cap or a hat to protect against the
sun. I agree with you about the advantages of a hat, however, DO NOT wear a
pith helmet, because there are far easier ways to make yourself ridiculous!
But there's help, because since colonial times, time didn't come to a stand
still. Therefore, my solution is the Tilley Hat, I've got two of them, one
for sunprotection on holidays, and one for use when I go with my kayak. The
people at Tilley take their job of making a hat serious, and all the
advantages you mentioned (head - headwear distance, ventilation,
watersoaking) are there, just read there website and judge for yourself,
