Yes, the route is passable. It's a long drive though ;-)

The ferry across the Zambezi at Caia runs during daylight hours only.

The bridge across the Zambezi at Tete is in good condition, and there
is a border post between Malawi and Mozambique on that route.

There's plenty of camping in Malawi along the lake. Monkey Bay at the
southern part of the lake is very popular.

Camping in Mozambique is less plentiful, but there are a few spots
along the Zambezi.
