David,

I don't know about £, but both ¤ and $ works well.

Some or many companies take traveller's cheques, but you can
always cash them in a bank branch.

However, take your Maestro (ec) card with you, because it is
about the best way to get Kenya Shillings at the Barclays ATMs.
More information is at http://michna.com/kenya.htm#Money .

I don't even take travellers' cheques any more. I only take the
Maestro card, a credit card to pay in lodges and as an emergency
measure for the case that all else fails, and a couple of
hundred $$ and ¤¤ in cash.

You may need a small bundle of $$ though, particularly in small
denominations, because some nature reserves take only $$, and
since they don't always adapt to the exchange rate quickly,
paying in $ may be quite a bit cheaper than paying in ¤.

The same holds for buying the visa at the airport on arrival.
Better have $50 on hand when you arrive.

Always take some extra cash with you, just in case.
