Oh, really!? I didn't know that.
I suppose taking travel and toursim courses from a professional travel
agent left me sympathetic to their point view, and I imagine they were
more than a little miffed when the airlines pulled that stunt. And I
still think the airlines are nuts to do that. They have a perishable
product -- once a particular flight on a particular day leaves the
gate it's impossible to sell more seats for that trip -- so that means
they SHOULD use every possible channel of distribution they can to get
bums on seats. That should include travel agents. And with the
financial trouble they're in, they need bums on seats more than ever!
Ten years ago, my T&T teacher said that in '94, she'd heard that
thanks to the internet, travel agencies would be gone "in ten years."
Well, 2004 has come and gone and travel agents are still around. Yet
the arilines are still making the same stupid decisions based on the
same stupid prediction.
Then again:

Maybe THAT'S why the airlines want them gone! :)
