People like you are one of the reasons I stopped flying. Another reason
was exactly the problem you are trying to avoid.

What it amounts to is that the airlines are such a hassle these days
that those of us who don't need to fly don't have to. I've just gone one
step beyond that, and it seems to cause some people to have a cow.
