I travel quite a lot and I have never locked any of my luggage and
never lost anything. I always choose cheap suitcases and I don't put
anything very valuable in checked luggage. My theory is that thieves
assume that my shabby unlocked luggage isn't worth their bother. I
sometimes use a safety pin to keep the zipper closed during a trip.
I agree with you that if someone cuts open your locked luggage, you've
got a big problem right away, aside from what might have been stolen.
Maybe if you happen to be at an airport when you discover the damage,
you could have the bag wrapped in that plastic people use to protect
their luggage.
My biggest worry would be losing the key and having to cut open the
bag myself.
