I just came from China, I used a handling company to get the visa
because it was business travel and my company has a contract with them.
However I ran into a retired couple who was there on a cruise, they
told me that their cruise line handled the visa for them and screwed
them up -- got them single-entry instead of mulitiple entry visas.
During a land excursion in Hong Kong they simply stopped by the Chinese
counselate or whatever and got new visas on a walk-in. So while I
wouldn't plan on it being that easy, apparently it isn't really that
hard.
AT the PEK airport there is also a desk where you can apply for a visa
before you hit immigration, but it was unmanned when I arrived.
