Having transported my cats twice in the past little while, I did a fair
amount of research. Yes, there are stories, but I couldn't find any
first hand stories, it was all friend-of-a-friend or other urban legend.

I did find that many airlines won't transport some animals on some
flights (based on time of year, length of flight, and origin/destination
combinations -- Specifically, flying to the southern states in the
mid-summer is tough)
