You needn't go that far back for comparison. Thirty-odd years ago, domestic
coach service was superior to today's first class. I remember eating real
steaks, fish fillet, or even "Special Meal" orders at no extra charge, all on
real dinner plates with real silverware and napkins. And free beer and wine.
And the aircraft were not filled to capacity. It was relatively common to
find three unoccupied seats, and go to sleep across them. United and
American flew 747s cross-country. There were ALWAYS empty rows. The upper
deck was a bar/lounge, open to anyone.
And the airlines made mucho money...
